Folio Albums

Design, Layout & Templates

What are the page specifications?

  • 12”x12” albums are printed at 24”x12”, creased in the middle and trimmed to 300mm x 300mm
  • 10”x10” albums are printed at 20”x10”, creased in the middle and trimmed to 249mm x 249mm
  • 8”x8” albums are printed at 16”x8”, creased in the middle and trimmed to 199mm x 199mm
  • 6”x6” albums are printed at 12”x6”, creased in the middle and trimmed to 147mm x 147mm

Please note that 6×6 albums are only available as duplicates of main albums and as such you won’t need to design a 6×6 album to the above specification – they are printed to these dimensions from the files of a main album design.

How much is trimmed?

  • 12″x12″ – 4.8mm from the left and right edges, 2.4mm from the top and bottom
  • 10″x10″ – 5mm from the left and right edges, 2.5mm from the top and bottom
  • 8″x8″ – 4.2mm from the left and right edges, 2.1mm from the top and bottom
  • 6″x6″ – 5.4mm from the left and right edges, 2.7mm from the top and bottom

Can I bleed my images off the page edge?

Yes and to ensure any image fully bleeds off the page you’ll need to place your image all the way to the edge of the page and not just across the trim line.

How much space should I leave around the page edge?

Unless the image is bleeding off the page, we recommend leaving between 15mm-20mm of space between the trim lines and your images. Leaving a nice gutter ensures images are not too close to the trim line and also helps when ordering smaller duplicates from a larger album as space and gutters are reduced during the resizing process.

Which software should I use to design my album?

Any. There is some great software available to design albums. We recommend PhotoJunction as you can design your album to our exact specification. We also like Adobe InDesign and Adobe Photoshop.

How do I design for Folio Albums using PhotoJunction?

First, make sure you have the latest version using the “Check for Updates” option within PhotoJunction. You’ll need to add Folio Albums as a supplier as follows:

If you’re new to PhotoJunction you can download it from their site http://photojunction.com/download/

MAC – Photojunction menu > Preferences -> Supplier > – select Folio Albums from the list and click INSTALL

PC – Edit > Preferences > Supplier > – select Folio Albums from the list and click INSTALL

The “account number” should be left empty and either leave “default space between apertures” and “default space to page edge” blank, or set them to our recommendations;

Default space between apertures: 5mm

Default space to page edge: 20mm

Note: The default settings are used by the “Align to page” tools and “Separate aperture” tools.

When creating an album PhotoJunction will ask you for the album specification which includes Reference, Album Format, Cover Material, Cover Style, Layout Background Colour, Total layouts. As you will select the specific cover material and cover style when placing your order via our online store, it is not important to select these options in PhotoJunction. PhotoJunction is used to create the page layouts only, therefore the most important options are “Album Format” – choose the size you’re designing for – and “Total Layouts”. We recommend leaving the background colour as white.

Can you design the album for me?

Yes, we offer two services; a simple album design service and a bespoke design service.

  • Simple album design service: You upload the individual images and we’ll place one on each page. So, if you have 20 spreads that would mean 40 pages so we’ll need 40 images. You will need to name your images in order as this is how they’ll appear in the album. Here’s an example.
  • Bespoke album design service: We’ll create a bespoke album layout designed to show off your images at their very best. The service includes online proofing via AlbumExposure and one round of revisions from yourself or your client before additional charges are applied. All we need from you are up to 4 images per spread, for a standard 15 spread album this would be a maximum of 60 images, which you can send us via our upload tool after placing your album order. Turnaround for the first draft is 5-7 working days.

Please note that if ordering a studio sample the discount will also apply to the design service.

Is the first page in the album on the left or on the right?

We print our albums in spreads of two pages, so the first page in your album will be on the left. If you want to start your design on the right, just leave the first page blank. The images below show the end sheet and an example first double page spread.

Do you check my images before they go to print?

We assume that your uploaded images are print-ready, but we’ll give them a visual once over to check for any obvious design, colour and tone issues before printing your album. However, as the photographer you are responsible for ensuring the images are of an acceptable quality and that the images are laid out correctly on the page. We can’t accept responsibility for any printing issues due to poor layout or image quality. If you have any concerns or questions don’t hesitate to email us.

Can I proof my album before it goes to print?

Unfortunately not. Apart from a visual check from our print team we work on the basis that you have designed your album ready for print. As long as you’ve numbered your spreads in sequence they’ll be printed and bound in the order in which you designed and named them.
